BACK CREEK YACHT CLUB
“Well-attended Memorial Weekend Cruise to Haven Harbor, Rock Hall and Chestertown Festivities” On May 3, the Club held its “Kentucky Derby Party;” members cheered on Big Brown’s victory and cried for Eight Bells. Members Lisa and Chuck Gorum hosted a tasty dinner of Tenderloin and wonderful sauces, along with an endless supply of Mint Juleps. Over 30 persons participated in a Mad Hatter competition appropriate for Derby Day; the hats were great. This was also the Club’s annual New Members Party, and more than 10 new members joined the other 60 members in attendance. Over Memorial Day Weekend members attended the Chestertown, MD Tea Party Festival, including re-enactment of the tossing of tea crates (and some sailors) overboard from the Schooner Sultana. The long weekend included parties on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at the Haven Harbor Marina in nearby Rock Hall. A very competitive bocce ball competition was held Sunday evening. On May 16th, members Jan and Ruth Cort hosted at Peninsula House, their Annapolis Bed and Breakfast, the Club’s monthly Happy Hour at which Walt Disenza of the Coast Guard Auxiliary discussed “Radio Protocol, or “What you always wanted to know about vessel radios but were afraid to ask.” He highlighted VHF Radio protocols explaining procedures for those who are a little apprehensive when it comes to hailing ship to shore, ship to ship, or ship to help.
The next BCYC Midweek Event is a lunch raft up scheduled for June 4th at Noon on the Rhode River, LAT 38.52N, LON 76.31W. It will morph into a long leisurely afternoon of visiting, swimming, and enjoying a relaxing time with fellow members and guests. Some boats even remain overnight. These are opportunities to enjoy the Chesapeake's beautiful creeks and rivers during a more quiet Midweek time. Every one brings their own lunch, beverage, and their favorite ON THE HOOK DESSERT to share. Look for BCYC BURGEES flying high. The Club’s week-long summer cruise will start June 14th, with a raft up near Dobbin and Gibson islands on the Magothy River, then head north to Poole's Island, and next go into Fairlee Creek (where Great Oaks Marina is located). From there it will go south to Caccaway Island on Langford Creek (off of the Chester River), then through Kent Island to Wye Island; and will conclude near Tilghman Island at the Miles River Yacht Club on the 21st.
