Submission for April 2008 Proptalk

BACK CREEK YACHT CLUB

While February and March are cold in Maryland, one option for getting through the Winter is to go South.  Three couples from BCYC went down to the mid-February Miami Boat Show, held primarily in South Beach, to investigate boating accessories and also to go aboard boats in the water in a warm setting.  Temperatures were in the 80s.  It is the largest boat show in the U.S., and many new products are introduced there for the upcoming boating season.  One not yet advertised hot item reported was Standard Horizon’s new 6 Watt “FLOATING” Handheld VHF with built in GPS, HX850S.

In Annapolis, BCYC members met on February 27th  to celebrate Leap Year and Winter’s half-way point at Yellow Fin Tuna overlooking the South River.  Then, on March 7th, former Commodore Rosie Gollehon hosted a gathering at her house right on Bodkin Creek for a Southwest Tex/Mex party featuring their sizzling hot chili.  On April 11th, members will be able to attend a presentation on seamanship and safety by a professional Bay Pilot and a session on a ship bridge simulator that 85% of the world's Pilots train on.  Club members will be able to get a perspective of what a pilot encounters when navigating up the Bay.  Earlier in February BCYC held a Red Wine and Chocolate Dinner hosted by club members and wine lovers JJ Sullivan and Juliana Nedd at the Bay Club, Annapolis Naval Station.  This gastronomic event and red wine experience taught members and guests about pairing red wine and food, with all courses sharing “a hint of chocolate.”  For more information on this active cruising Club with a varied range of social activities and to participate in its activities during the current winter season and into the Spring when Club members start back into cruising events on the water, check out its website at gobcyc.com and call Bill Kranzer, membership chair, at (410) 263-9770.  The first cruise event is already scheduled for April 27, less than two months away!
