BACK CREEK YACHT CLUB
Wondering how sailors can survive when its cold outside, winter storms are raging, and the Chesapeake Bay’s water is starting to glaze over with ice? One way is to share photos of other Club members having fun in the sun in the Virgin Islands over the winter and at least vicariously experience their adventures. Two boats from BCYC went south in the Fall with the Caribbean 1500 Rally heading for the Virgin Islands. New Wave, with Ben and Candy Wilson, and Nana Maria, with Mark and Janel Seier, used the Rally to get there and now have been exploring the Islands together over the Winter. They ended up recently at St. John’s when Club members Richard and Michelle Sanger visited them and brought back photos for all to enjoy . . . and envy.
On a more activist vein, Club members also have started to prepare for the upcoming sailing season through various educational events in Annapolis. One recent Club event involved experiencing new taste treats to share during the summer. On February 9th, BCYC held a Red Wine and Chocolate Dinner hosted by club members and wine lovers JJ Sullivan and Juliana Nedd at the Bay Club, Annapolis Naval Station. This gastronomic event and red wine experience taught members and guests about pairing red wine and food, with all courses sharing “a hint of chocolate.” The first course was a salad with baby greens, strawberries, oranges and chocolate covered raisins with club member Sassy Lisa's Vinaigrette dressing paired with a beautiful 2004 Bailley Lapierrre Cremant De Bourgogne Sparkling Rose. The second course was chili with chicken apple and elk meat sausages and chocolate sauce paired with a 2006 Cline "Old Vine" Red Zinfandel. The third and main course was chicken mole, rice, and green beans paired with a 2006 Firesteed Oregon Pinot Noir. The dessert course, prepared by club member Jo Rys, featured chocolate truffles and other delectable chocolate surprises paired with a Benjamin Australian Tawny Port. YUM!
In March, a Happy Hour and a practical class to explore GPS systems will occur on March 7; on March 12th a Midweek social gathering will be held in Annapolis; and, another land event is scheduled for March 15th and is being planned. For more information on this active cruising Club with a varied range of social activities and to participate in its activities during the current winter season and into the Spring when Club members start back into cruising events on the water, check out its website at gobcyc.com and call Bill Kranzer, membership chair, at (410) 263-9770.
