BACK CREEK YACHT CLUB

On December 9, 2006, after several weeks of intense work by Club members, Back Creek Yacht Club’s entry in the Lights Parade constructed for Mike and Kelly Lange’s power boat, "Lil Le Roy," presented “Little Toot’s” lighted smiling face, with red cap, and three puffs of smoke for the assembled crowd watching the Parade.   Club members, other than those on the boat, cheered on Little Toot, from the Club's decorated balcony suite at the Marriott Hotel.   BCYC’s entry received two awards, one for the Best Small Powerboat Entry in the Lights Parade and the "Sarles Award."

The light structure fit perfectly on its Nordic Tug base, and fully captured the countenance of the character made famous in the children's maritime story written by Hardie Gramatky and captured in a Disney movie of an anthropomorphic tugboat child, who disgraces his father "Big Toot" with his childish antics, is exiled from the harbor, and learns that he must give up his foolishness and grow up in order to earn the respect of the other boats and his father.

Members Gail Higgenbotham (who did the art work), Jan and Ruth Cort, Mike Lange, Wally Stone, David Beyer, Commodore Rosie Gollehon, and a whole gang of volunteers made this happen!  It was a great effort all around for those who design and made Little Toot come alive for the Parade.

The Club’s next event in the New Year is a visit to the Philadelphia Strictly Sail over the weekend of January 19-20, 2007.  Members will gather for an early informal dinner nearby on Saturday after the show closes for the night.  On January 27, 2007, the Club will hold its Commodore's Ball at the Annapolis Yacht Club when its new Officers will be introduced.  There will be a silent auction with many interesting items available for bid.  Music will be provided by Mike Lange and Boogie Express.   The Club has also been holding Monthly Midweek Events and in December, members met to enjoy the fabulous Midnight Madness Celebration in Annapolis on December 14 for happy hour and dinner at Galway Bay followed by shopping until midnight.  Pat Bernhart, at 703-425-0913, can be reached for details of January’s restaurant visit event to be held on Wednesday the 17th
